P is for PhD!

I just received a call from Ohio University. I'm in their PhD program for nonfiction.

OU offers $15,000 — untold riches for a grad student.

Wow! Best week ever in Kellyland!

Athens is a great town. Beautiful. Green hills and red brick.

Yeah, it's in southern Ohio, but it's a liberal bastion. Something like Missoula in that way. There are a lot of hippies, and of the state schools in Ohio I would say it attracts probably the second most serious tier. Which is pretty good, since there are fifteen or twenty state schools in Ohio.

It has a great journalism program, as you know, so it attracts kids who want to write out of high school, yearbook geeks and the like (I was a yearbook geek myself, and almost ended up going to school there), which should make TAing a tad more enjoyable.

I've got friends in Cincinnati, which is nearby, and I've got a lot of family in Columbus, which is a two or three hour drive, so if you need a place to crash while you're apartment hunting, call me up.

Anyway, congrats. Huge accomplishment. Isn't this the school that takes one PhD a year?
